A founding member of the band in 1984, Paul played a huge part in the success of the band, from the crashing chords on the debut single, LA Rain, to the intricate guitar work on the latest album released by the band, I.C.E.

Since the band reformed in 2019, Paul’s energetic and entertaining stage performances have contributed to the band receiving rave live reviews and delighting our family of wonderful fans, both new and old.

The band would like to thank Paul for everything and wish him huge success with his solo work. You can follow Paul's solo work via his website.

We have great pleasure in introducing you to the new guitar player in The Rose of Avalanche - none other than the mighty Mr Dave (Wolfie) Wolfenden!!!

Wolfie has been a leading figure in the British post punk / goth scene for many years, as guitarist with Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Expelaires, The Mission, and currently the fabulous Vig Vam Bam and we are delighted and honoured that Wolfie has agreed to come onboard for the next exciting stage of The Rose of Avalanche journey.

Wolfie will be joining up with the band immediately to work on both existing and new material.

The band will be playing the Antenna Festival in Leeds on Saturday 14th January 2023 and Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival in Whitby on Friday 28th April 2023 - tickets are available via the Live page of this website and we hope to announce a couple of UK shows for later this year.

Congrats to Joel for putting on such an awesome festival and highlighting the rich cultural contribution our fine city has made.

After the fun in the sun this weekend, the band are going on their summer holibobs, so things will be noticeably quieter for a while. The online shop is open for business, if you want to upgrade your summer wardrobe with various items of swanky ROA clothing, and we will continue to chase Chapter 22 Records for news on the 'At The BBC' vinyl release. Thanks to everyone that came to Bedford & Leeds, we had a blast.

Vive Le Rock published two interviews with the band in the run in to the festival. You can read one online here, and the Q&A with Paul is included below. Our gratitude and love to Eugene Butcher for his continuing support of the band and to Desperate Measures for joining us in Bedford.

Speak soon,

Some 30 years ago and in the glowing embers signalling the final days of The Rose of Avalanche Phase 1 our very own Phillip Morris, Glenn Schultz, and Darren Horner (plus unnamed Drum Machine) snuck off to record some new music at The Big House in Leeds.

Whilst the new songs would be given an airing at the final RoA Phase 1 gig at the Duchess pub in Leeds, they were essentially recorded by our 3 heroes as a spin off project called Diversion.

After many years of gathering dust in Rose towers, the Diversion tapes have been given a spit and polish and are now, for the very first time, available to buy.

You can find them on our shiny new Diversion section of The Rose of Avalanche website.
The Rose of Avalanchetag:roseofavalanche.com,2005:Post/68179912021-11-22T18:00:06+00:002021-11-22T18:00:06+00:00Pre-order At The BBC
"The Rose of Avalanche At The BBC" captures that early creative spark of a band who went from buying their first instruments to recording for John Peel in less than a year, and then checks in some 10 months later with their 1986 Radio 1 session for Janice Long, finding a band full of confidence off the back of the success of their second and third singles, and on the cusp of hitting the big time.

Behind the scenes we are really working hard to make this release special, and to try and rekindle that wonderful feeling of poring over the sleeve while you're listening to the music.

We have teamed up with Phil Pike, a.k.a. Pip Pop Art who created an original canvas painting using an old promotional photo of the band from back in the day. We were blown away with the result, we hope you love it too!

To celebrate the reveal we sat down with Phil to learn more about his story.

How did you get involved in the album project?

I launched an 80s Goth collection last year and James, The Rose of Avalanche's manager, approached me at the start of 2021 to do a commission of Wayne Hussey from his The Sisters of Mercy era with his 12 string guitar. James was so pleased with the painting I did for him that more recently he contacted me again and told me he was the manager of the band and asked if I was interested in doing some artwork for their new album. I obviously jumped at the chance to be involved with such a cool band and exciting project, and was really proud to be asked to do the cover.

Are you pleased with how The Rose painting turned out, can you describe your process?

Yes, I’m really pleased with the end result and hope everyone else thinks so too! I used a pour technique with liquid acrylics in various shades of purples, pinks and silver to create the dramatic background. This is left to dry and cure for 2 to 3 weeks prior to painting the band portraits over the top to create the final image.

You became an artist later in life, tell us how that came about?

Yes that’s right although I did enjoy painting as a hobby when I was younger. I never really had the time to carry on due to pursuing a corporate career as well as bringing up a family which took up most of my time. It’s only as I approached my 50s and my kids grown up that I have found more time to pursue some of my passions that have had to take a side line over the years. I decided to go part time in my professional job, join a band and start painting again. That’s when I started my Pip Pop Art venture.

Music is a clear passion of yours - it's the primary focus of your art and you are also a guitarist in a band. What does music mean to you?

I’ve always loved music and my life has revolved around it, whether it’s listening to my favourite artists, going to gigs, or playing with my band. The post punk new wave music of the early 80s was what really got me hooked and it’s still the best era in music for me. I still listen to all those great artists, Adam Ant, Blondie, Human League, OMD, Gary Numan etc from that time period 40 years later.

How do you come up with the ideas for your collections?

It’s pretty easy really as I just paint all the artists that I know and love and mean something to me. I really think you have to be inspired with the subject matter that you are painting to make it enjoyable, and I absolutely love all the bands from that era. The hardest thing is just deciding specifically which bands and artists to include in the collection as there are so many great ones to choose from.

Which collection and individual painting has been your best sellers?

My 80s Goth Collection has been particularly successful and I have picked up a lot of Goth music followers on the back of it. I think it’s down to the bold, colourful style I have used which you don’t often see with Goth work which tends to be on the black and darker side, but people seem to like it. There’s also less people painting some of the Goth artists so people are really enthused to see an entire collection of their favourite genre. In terms of specific paintings, my Adam Ant and Blondie paintings have probably been the best sellers to date as they are such iconic images and still have wide spread popularity.

Were you into any of those goth bands back in the day?

Yes I was absolutely in to those bands back in the day. It was kind of the cool music you matured into in your mid-teens as you move on from the poppier end of the spectrum. I have very fond memories of dancing to The Cult at Images nightclub in Worcester where I grew up when I was 17 or 18. The inspiration simply comes from painting the bands I love – I also like to put on my old records of these artists when I paint them as its often an excuse to refamiliarize myself with some old favourites that I might not have listened to in a while.

Has the success of your paintings surprised you? What do you have up your sleeve for your next collection?

Gosh yes, it’s totally blown me away! I have picked up over 7,000 followers on Facebook in 18 months which is beyond my wildest expectations, and have sold work internationally all over the world. When I started I was just happy that anyone would even consider buying a piece of my work, but the positive support and feedback I received was absolutely overwhelming and gave me the encouragement and confidence I needed to carry on. It’s great being able to do what I love and earn a little extra pocket money in the process. The main reward though is getting positive messages back from people who are getting happiness from my paintings. I’ve just started a ‘New Romantics’ collection so expect lots of colourful paintings with eccentric fashion and over the top haircuts!

Where can people find you?

A previously unpublished photo from that session has been used in the upcoming 'At The BBC' release.

You started off photographing your mates in your local skin & punk scene. Tell us how it all came about, and were you purposely trying to document what was happening around you, or wasn't there a real plan at that stage?

I just caught the photography bug at 14 , got into Madness and the two tone scene at the same time. There was no plan, I just really enjoyed taking photographs, and being a part of this new scene that I really related to. I felt I had to record it all to prove it happened.

Music is at the core of so many movements like skins, punks, goth, rave etc, how big a part has music played in your life and what were you into?

I would say music drove the whole process. I came from a household where music was really important. All youth cultures are driven by the music. Fashion comes second.

You photographed The Rose of Avalanche for Sounds in 1985, and a previously unpublished photograph from that session features in the gatefold for the upcoming 'At The BBC' album. Do you remember much about the session?

Yes, that was taken outside Dingwalls in Camden. I was a jobbing photographer working for Sounds, so I was out and about at gigs most nights. The band must have been doing a gig that night at the venue. I remember Sounds wanted to do an article on them so they needed a band shot. I'm not a fan of using flash if I’m doing band shots. I remember actually being happy with how they came out. I thought they looked like they were in Berlin, or somewhere not Camden.

Did you work for the other music papers as well? Any particular artists you photograph back then stand out, or any stories to share?

Not really. All the music papers hated each other so once you worked for one you basically had to stick with them. I was with the Damned on their tour bus heading out somewhere, when the driver got into a road rage fight on the side of the road. I remember all of us just standing in the rain watching this bizarre fight, that was surreal!

In recent years it looks like you have diversified into fashion photography, but still with that strong link to youth culture, working with brands like Dr Martens. Tell us about those projects.

I had avoided fashion photography, but VICE contacted me and asked if I wanted to do some fashion work with them, so I thought I would give it a go. It turned out I was good at it, and I enjoyed it. Thinking about it I had always been doing fashion photography in a way. Then Dr Martens took a chance and booked me to do a big campaign, which turned out to have a big impact for then out there.

You have also kept the music side of things, having worked with Plan B. What music are you into these days?

Yes, I got to work with Ben Drew for a few years, which was a great experience, and I was a part of the first 2 Rudimental albums, so I felt very grateful to be a part of all that. At the moment I'm getting into a lot of soundtracks like Hypnotherapy. I don’t even know what type of genre that music is, but I like it a lot. I also like Amyl and the Sniffers, they are the real deal.

What is your view of technology's impact on photography? With the advent of camera phones and the internet, do you think the art and skill of good photography is in danger of being lost, and what's been the impact of the right click 'save as' mentality on photographers' copyright and recognition?

Thats a huge question, and I'm far too lazy to type out a full on answer, but quality, talent and skill will always shine though. The basics and fundamentals of creating a great image is still the same, its all relative, you're not going to use a phone to do a 100 grand Gucci shoot, and millions of the these images will be lost over time. It will be the ones left that will be seen in the future, no different from the film days really.

Think about how many images ended up in landfills so I don't think it has changed the fundamentals too much, and most young photographers I meet love their film. I like digital because of being able to see what you have on the job. With film anything could happen between the shoot and getting them processed.

THE ROSE OF AVALANCHE AT THE BBC’ TO BE RELEASED IN NOVEMBER 2021

Legendary alt/rock/goth band The Rose of Avalanche have signed with Chapter 22.

Rewind to early 1985. Having yet to play a gig, a fresh-faced, ragtag, band of friends found themselves in the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios recording their own John Peel session.

Despite being young, naive, and still learning their craft, right from the off The Rose of Avalanche were churning out finely tuned slabs of sleazy, guitar-driven goth rock that belied their age and experience. Peel loved them, and followed the session by placing the band’s first single “L.A. Rain” at number 26 in his 1985 Festive 50, above songs by The Cure, The Smiths and The Sisters of Mercy. Guitarist Glenn quipped "John Peel really liked us, but then again he also thought that Teenage Kicks by The Undertones was the greatest song ever written"

From there the bands next four singles dominated the UK Independent Charts. “Goddess” matched the chart-topping debut “L.A. Rain” and was named Single of The Week by Sounds, “Too Many Castles In The Sky” went Top 5, followed by “Velveteen” and “Always There”, with The Rose invited back to The BBC to record a second session, this time for Janice Long.

Head of Chapter 22, Dean Brown said: “We are delighted to have Rose of Avalanche join our exciting roster of bands at Chapter 22 Records. They bring with them the heritage and swagger of the 1980’s and join a list of bands they know well from that time. The ‘’BBC Sessions’ sound fantastic and we can’t wait to bring them to you this autumn”

Available for the first time since the original radio broadcasts some 30 years ago, this album contains all the tracks from their two BBC sessions, capturing the excitement and creative force of a band on the cusp of hitting the big time.

Various rumours of a reunion surfaced over the intervening years, and in August 2019 the band finally announced it was reforming the original line up. The reaction to The Rose’s triumphant return was overwhelming, and history repeated itself with the band being offered headline gigs in the UK and Europe and confirmed as main support for the UK leg of The Mission’s upcoming UK Tour.

The band will play a handful of intimate gigs this November to promote the release of the album, and are looking forward to hitting the road with The Mission again in Spring 2022.
